Arajet, the low-cost carrier based in the Dominican Republic, is actively expanding its presence in the Caribbean, aiming to transform the Dominican Republic into a pivotal hub for flights connecting South America with North America. The airline, which launched operations in 2022, strategically uses Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana International Airport as central hubs. Punta Cana also serves as a vital direct destination for tourists.
In its ongoing efforts to enhance regional connectivity, Arajet is set to introduce new routes, including flights from Santo Domingo to San Juan, Puerto Rico, starting in the upcoming second quarter. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to include more Caribbean destinations such as Puerto Rico and Cuba, complementing existing services to Aruba, Curazao, St. Martin, and Jamaica.
The Caribbean region is known for its limited air connectivity, a challenge Arajet is addressing by positioning Santo Domingo as a crucial transfer point for inter-island travel. This initiative not only benefits intra-Caribbean journeys but also offers travelers from outside the region streamlined connections across multiple islands from this single hub.
Arajet’s fleet includes ten Boeing 737-8 aircraft, with plans to increase this number to 15 by the end of the year. An additional aircraft is expected to join the fleet by the second quarter of 2025. The airline’s route network extends beyond the Caribbean to Central America, with flights to Costa Rica, Guatemala, and El Salvador, as well as to Cancun and Mexico City in Mexico. Furthermore, Arajet will commence flights to Miami, enhancing its network given Miami’s role as a primary hub for Caribbean travel. This new service is anticipated to significantly boost the airline’s connectivity within the Caribbean, leveraging Miami’s strategic location.
